Café & Kosmos

Café & Kosmos - Talk with the scientists: The event series Café & Kosmos is engaged with current research questions "out of the universe," including the Big Bang, string theory, dark energy, dark matter, and many other topics.

These discussion rounds take place once per month, normally on a Tuesday evening at the Muffatwerk or at the Münchner Volkshochschule.

The organizers of Café & Kosmos are research institutions in Munich and Garching: the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS, the Max Planck Institute for Physics, the MPI for Astrophysics,  the MPI for Extraterrestrial Physics, and the SFB 1258 (Neutrinos, Dark Matter, Messengers) at the Technical University of Munich.

String theory – the key to the universe

Café and Kosmos on May 9, 2023

String theory is a theory to unify two otherwise incompatible concepts: It creates a mathematical substructure to accommodate both quantum physics and gravity. With string theory our reality would not be composed of particles, but of tiny, vibrating…

Particle accelerator sheds light on dark matter

Café & Kosmos on April 11, 2023

Dark matter is essential for understanding the rotation speed of stars in galaxies and the motion of galaxies in clusters. But what exactly is dark matter? This question has occupied researchers for decades. But it is not only observations of…

Gamma astronomy: On the trail of the most energetic objects in the universe

Café & Kosmos on March 6, 2023

The two MAGIC telescopes on the Canary Island of La Palma have been in existence for 20 years. With a mirror diameter of 17 meters and special cameras, they measure what cannot actually be measured on Earth: Gamma rays that reach us from extremely…
